In the Middle Ages, the border between the diocese of Utrecht (or the county of Twente) and the prince-bishopric of Münster ran along the current national border near Enschede. The Aamsveen is a border moor. Where exactly the border ran was unclear for a long time. It was only established at the end of the Middle Ages. Historical sources show that there have been many border conflicts since at least 1541. After the war against France, the Netherlands concluded a final border treaty with the new Prussian farmers in 1816.
